Yamaheigama / Arita ware "Egg Shell" Sake Cup (set of 5 shapes) *
Description
Egg ShellAmong tableware made for export from the Edo period to the Meiji period, there was a type of porcelain that was at the height of its technique, thin like an eggshell, yet strong, called "Rankakude" and highly praised by Westerners as "eggshell" porcelain.
Based on this "Rankakude", the series reproduced this eggshell hand technique using a unique technique with improved translucent ceramic clay.
The porcelain base is about 1mm thick and has a translucent quality characteristic of porcelain that makes one wonder if it is a lighting fixture.
The white, thin ceramics is made of a special clay, originally blended by Yamaheigama, and molded in a plaster mold. The exterior texture of the Egg Shell is processed with a brush and decorative clay.
Yamaheigama
Yamaheigama is a pottery of Arita porcelain located in Arita Town, Saga Prefecture.
Yamaheigama was born shortly after World War II as the second son of Yamashogama, an Arita-yaki potter, and was trained as a potter by the previous generation, Heisaku Yamamoto.
Currently, Hirofumi Yamamoto launched his own brand "Y's Homestyle" in 2011, creating simple and stylish tableware, dishes, and kitchenware.
Arita-ware is a region where the division of labor is the mainstay, and in many cases, the dough maker and the kiln are separate, but here the pottery is consistently manufactured at the kiln from the unglazed dough to processing and final firing.
Arita ware (Porcelain)
Arita-ware is the general term for porcelain fired in and around the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture.
The main feature of this hard, durable, and transparent white porcelain is that it is delicately decorated with bright colors such as red, yellow, and gold.
From the late 17th to the late 18th century, Arita porcelain was shipped in large quantities both domestically and overseas, especially to Europe.
Also, since Arita had no port for shipping, pottery made in Arita was loaded from the nearest port, Imari Port, and thus became known as "Imari ware" instead of "Arita ware (Arita porcelain)".
