Odakodoki
Odakou-douki was founded in 1925. In February 2010 their Japanese style Yukaina nakamatachi (Fun Mates) coaster set won First Prize at the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry National Recommended Sightseeing Souvenirs Awards as well as the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Award. In October 2013 their Red & White range won the Category Award and the Members Award at the 53rd Toyama Prefecture Design Show. Some 400 years ago in the Toyama Prefecture, Takaoka Copperware established the method for casting metal in a mould. The manufacturing process is divided into several important stages carried out by a specialised workforce. Outstanding skills are consolidated for every stage of the process. They make products ranging from large bronze items including temple bells and Buddhist statues to artistically decorative craftworks such as Buddhist alter articles and flower vases.
They value products that take the consumer's needs into consideration. They often put themselves in the position of their customers and ask themselves important such as; in what situations will they use this product? With whom will they be using it? And will they enjoy using it? As they are a manufacturer without fabrication facilities they plan and design, then choose the right factory for the material and methods that are suitable for the product. In this way design comes before the method and we are capable of creating functional goods in their most beautiful forms. Taking advantage of Takaoka’s long history of copper ware, we have formed a collaboration with Tsubame-shi of the Niigata Prefecture, one of the leading metal processing centres in Japan.
The copper used in their products is a soft metal that can be processed easily. It also has superior heat conductivity and antibacterial properties. Its colour is warm and desirable to look at. It is said that the colder the iced coffee is, the more aroma it emits. Their specially made ice coffee cups are specifically made so the user can enjoy not only the aroma of coffee but also the chill from the cup. The manufacturing process follows four stages involving cutting, pressing, hammering and polishing. The inside of the cup is tin-plated and the outside clear-coated. Their flower vases take advantage of the antibacterial and disinfectant properties of copper. This product lets the flower stay fresh for longer. They chose not to apply any rust preventing treatment to the surface so that the user can enjoy the changes from its aging. The vases can be put into a glass holder for table use or you can put copper wire through the holes in the upper part and hang it on the wall. There are various ways to use it depending on the room atmosphere and the type of the flower. Made from copper piping the bottom is sealed with urethane rubber.
