about Emma Bridgewater
Emma, who was looking for a special set of cup saucers as a birthday present for her mother, was disappointed that no shop sold what she was looking for. Then, in 1985, Emma founded a pottery company when she realized that there were other people like her looking for colorful, beautiful and practical pottery. Currently, Emma Bridgewater is run by her and her husband Matthew Rice, and they are also planning a design. The pattern design of spongeware and the design of Emma's more regular collection, Ear in the Country, Bird and Animal, are by Matthew.
design ideas are all inspired by the daily lives of Emma, Matthew and their four children. For example, the marmalade pattern, which is brightly cut orange, was created in February every year after the family custom of making home-made marmalade and stocking it on cupboards. In addition, all of Emma Bridgewater's pottery products are handmade in Stoke-on-Trent, the birthplace of British ceramics. It is one of the largest ceramic manufacturers in Stoke-on-Trent and is also sold in famous London department stores such as Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty.
, all Emma Bridgewater spongeware uses their own hand-cut sponge stamps. The technology, which began in the 19th century, is the greatest feature of Emma Bridgewater and brings a colorful and special charm. Emma and Matthew have designed all patterns, which are cut into sponges using "s into s into" in the factory. Then, ink is attached to the sponge, and a pattern is drawn on the baked pottery. Some of them are very complicated, but they are handy for skilled potters. Because it is a hand-pressed back stamp, there is a shade of color, but it is also the charm of handmade.
