England - Made in England" and
has a workshop in Stoke-on-Trent, the birthplace of British ceramics
, and is consistently carried out in England from firing to coloring.
Emma, who was looking for a special set of cup saucers as a birthday present for her mother, was disappointed that there were no shops selling what she was looking for. In 1985, Emma realized that there were other people like herself who wanted colorful, beautiful and practical pottery, so she started a pottery company. Today, Emma Bridgewater is run and designed by her and her husband, Matthew Rice. The pattern design and shapes of the spongewear are by Emma, while the more regular collections of Year in the Country, Bird, and Animal design are by Matthew.
The design ideas are all inspired by the daily lives of Emma, Matthew and their four children. For example, the bright orange marmalade pattern was created after the family's custom of making homemade marmalade every February and stocking it on cupboards. In addition, all Emma Bridgewater's pottery items are handmade in Stoke-on-Trent, the birthplace of British ceramics. It is one of the largest ceramic manufacturers in Stoke-on-Trent and is sold in some of London's most prestigious department stores such as Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty.
All Emma Bridgewater sponge wear uses in-house hand-cut sponge stamps. Dating back to the 19th century, the technique is Emma Bridgewater's greatest characteristic, offering a colourful and special charm. Emma and Matthew design all the patterns, which are cut into sponges using a "soldering iron" in the factory. Then, ink is applied to the sponge and the pattern is drawn on the baked pottery. Some of them are very complex, but they are good for skilled potters. Because it is a hand-pressed back stamp, there are shades of color, but it is also a handmade charm.
