everyday Emma Bridgewater tableware, which is reminiscent of the careful life of a small village in England, is "Made in England - Made in England
" and has a workshop in Stoke-on-Trent, the birthplace of British ceramics,
and is consistently done in England from firing to coloring.
Looking for a special set of cup saucers as a birthday present for her mother, Emma was disappointed that there was no store selling what she was looking for. In 1985, Emma realized that there were other people like her who wanted colorful, beautiful and practical pottery, so she started a pottery company. Today, Emma Bridgewater is run and designed by her and her husband, Matthew Rice. The spongeware pattern design and shape are by Emma, while the more regular collections of Ears in the Country, Bird and Animal are designed by Matthew.
The design ideas are all inspired by the daily lives of Emma, Matthew and their four children. For example, the marmalade pattern with bright orange slices was created after the family's custom of making homemade marmalade every February and stocking it on a cupboard. All of Emma Bridgewater's pottery is handmade in Stoke-on-Trent, the cradle of British ceramics. It is one of the largest ceramic manufacturers in Stoke-on-Trent and is sold in famous department stores in London, including Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty.
All Emma Bridgewater spongeware uses our own hand-cut sponge stamps. Originating in the 19th century, this technology is Emma Bridgewater's main feature and brings a colourful and special charm. Emma and Matthew design all the patterns, which are cut into sponges at the factory using a "soldering iron". Then, ink is applied to the sponge and a pattern is drawn on the unglazed pottery. Some of them are very complex, but skilled potters can afford them. Since it is a hand-pressed back stamp, there are shades of color, but that is also the charm of handmade.
