"About Emma Bridgewater"
Looking for a special set of cup saucers as a birthday present for her mother, Emma was disappointed that no shop was selling what she was looking for. Then, in 1985, emma found that there were others like herself who sought colorful, beautiful and practical pottery, and she started a pottery company. Emma Bridgewater is currently run and designed by her and her husband Matthew Rice. The pattern design of the sponge wear and the shape are emma's, and the more regular collection of year-in-the-country, bird and animal designs are by Matthew.
design ideas are all inspired by the daily lives of Emma and Matthew and their four children. For example, the marmalade pattern, which is brightly sliced orange, was created every February after the family's custom of making home-made marmalade and stocking it on a cupboard. All Emma Bridgewater ceramics products are handmade in Stoke-on-Trent, the birthplace of British ceramics. It is one of the largest ceramics manufacturers in Stoke-on-Trent and is also sold at well-known London department stores such as Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty.
all Emma Bridgewater spongeware uses her own hand-cut sponge stamps. The technique, which began in the 19th century, is Emma Bridgewater's greatest feature, d'ecosting its colorful and special charm. Emma and Matthew have designed all the patterns, which are cut into sponges using "hadering" in the factory. Then ink the sponge and draw a pompom and pattern on the open-baked pottery. Some are very complicated, but they are yours for skilled potters. Because it is a hand-pressed back stamp, there is a shade of color, but it is also a handmade charm.
