The lacquerware called "japan" in English is a traditional handicraft, which represents Japan. Wajima lacquerware has been designated as "Important Intangible Cultural Heritage of Japanese traditional crafts" for its products and its system of production and distribution.
Wajima lacquerware is the strongest Japanese lacqueware. Indeed, the local diatom earth is used, the fragile parts are reinforced with linen cloth, and the surface is coated by lacquer hundred times.
The production is segmented in wood carving, painting, decorating and completing. The Wajima ware is handcrafted only from natural materials, wood and lacquer, and becomes better over time.
