Description
Alvar Aalto CollectionAlvar Aalto (1898-1976) is recognised today as one of the great masters of modern architecture and Scandinavian design. He created his own unique style of architecture and design inspired by man and nature.
His first sketches for the vases were playfully called "Eskimo woman's leather trousers". Nature played a great role in Alvar Aalto's life and creativity. The undulating forms of the objects in the Aalto collection are like the Finnish landscape with its thousands of lakes - beautiful, alive and untamed. Glassblowers at the Iittala factory still meticulously handcraft the legendary vases that are variations on one theme, fluid organic shapes that let the end user decide the use. Interpretations of the shape in new colours and materials add to the growing Alvar Aalto Collection and remain true to his original design idea.
Iittala
In 1881, "Iitala" was born as a glass products manufacturer of Finland, country of forests and lakes. Already at that time, the glassware of the master-glassblower Peter Magnus Abrahamsson had an exceptional brightness, and it still fascinates people.
Designer: Alvar Aalto
Born in Kuortane in 1898, Alvar Aalto made his name as a master of modern architecture through his unique style and exceptional talent. He worked closely with his wife Aino Aalto.
Aalto designed concert halls, libraries, hospitals, museums and private homes, among others, all around the world. His works were exhibited in the New York Museum of Modern Art already in the 1930s. Aalto also designed several objects which were originally intended to become parts of buildings and decorations. However, the objects took on a life of their own.
The most famous of the objects designed by Aalto is the Aalto vase, which was first seen at the 1937 Paris World Exposition. Independently and together with his wife Aino Aalto, Alvar Aalto designed a number of versatile objects.
